Video: Lieutenant Colonel's Car Blown Up in a Military-Only Area in St. Petersburg
On August 27, a car carrying a Russian lieutenant colonel exploded in the Slavyanka neighborhood of St. Petersburg. The area is known as a sort of “officers’ town,” where Russian military personnel were provided with housing on a large scale, including apartments purchased by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The Slavyanka neighborhood underwent active development in the 2010s. During this period, the Russian Ministry of Defense purchased a large number of ready-to-move-in apartments there for contract soldiers, as well as for those being discharged to the reserves.
A distinctive feature of the neighborhood was the composition of the military personnel who received housing there. The apartments were primarily provided to mid-level and senior command staff of the Russian Army.
In particular, captains, majors, lieutenant colonels, and colonels settled in Slavyanka. Warrant officers and sergeants were also provided with housing. In 2013, it was reported that more than 3,800 officers’ families had moved into new homes in the new districts of St. Petersburg, particularly in Slavyanka.
It was in this neighborhood that a car explosion occurred on the morning of August 27, in which a lieutenant colonel and his wife were traveling. The military officer died at the scene, while his wife was hospitalized in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Preliminary reports indicate that a homemade explosive device detonated inside the vehicle. Russian law enforcement agencies have not yet officially disclosed the cause of the explosion. The name of the deceased lieutenant colonel and the unit in which he served have also not yet been revealed.
Prior to this, explosions were heard in occupied Luhansk, and detonations began.
