Video: A European resort in Spain was hit by devastating floods
The Spanish city of Jaén, a popular tourist destination, found itself at the epicenter of severe weather on June 17. A sudden flood caused streets to be inundated and created dangerous currents that swept people and cars away.
Due to the heavy downpour, the streets literally turned into rivers: torrents of water swept people off their feet, and cars were partially or completely submerged.
Footage posted online shows how the raging water knocked pedestrians off their feet and prevented them from getting back up. People screamed and called for help, trying to escape the swift current.
It is reported that the storm hit the southern Spanish city in the evening. There was so much water on the roads that drivers watched as wheeled trash containers were swept past their cars by the current. After the downpour, local residents and tourists were also hit by hail.
Although the storm lasted only about 20 minutes, it caused serious damage both in Jaén itself and in the surrounding areas. The police and fire and rescue services received 110 calls related to flooded garages and basements.
One photo shows a man being swept down the street by a powerful torrent of water, past a parked car with its windshield wipers running at full speed. The storm also tore up cobblestones, and the terraces of cafes and bars—where people had been enjoying the sunny weather just that afternoon—were left flooded.
As of this morning, there were no reports of casualties. Authorities have not yet reported whether the sudden flooding resulted in injuries or fatalities, according to The Mirror.
Earlier, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Amami Island in Japan.
A powerful earthquake also struck China, prompting the evacuation of thousands of people.
Prior to that, an earthquake was recorded in Ukraine.
