A new train service has launched in Sweden along the picturesque west coast — The Independent

A new railway route has officially opened in Sweden, stretching approximately 600 kilometers along the country’s west coast and connecting the city of Malmö with Oslo, the capital of Norway.

Passengers are promised a true “scenic train ride,” as the journey offers views of diverse natural landscapes and historical landmarks

A direct daytime train runs between major Scandinavian cities via Gothenburg, making stops at other Swedish and Norwegian coastal towns.

Specifically, passengers can get on or off at stations in Lund, Helsingborg, Halmstad, Varberg, Trollhättan, Sarpborg, and Fredrikstad.

The minimum one-way fare for the entire route starts at 149 Swedish kronor, which is approximately 11.7 British pounds or 15.6 U.S. dollars; however, the final price depends on the travel season.

To help tourists get the most out of their trip, the Swedish Tourist Board has prepared special recommendations on choosing the best seats on the trains.

On the first leg of the route from Malmö to Gothenburg, travelers are advised to sit on the left side to see the coastline and the medieval fortress of Varberg.

Passengers who want to admire the architecture and historic buildings should choose seats on the right side, which offer a magnificent view of the famous Lund Cathedral.

The next part of the train journey offers equally spectacular natural panoramas. On the stretch between Gothenburg and Mellerud, the most stunning views are on the right side of the train.

It is from this vantage point that passengers can see Lake Vänern—the third-largest lake in Europe, which, due to its vast size, resembles the open sea—as well as picturesque river landscapes.

This transforms the journey from a mere trip between countries into a full-fledged tourist route.

The international publication The Independent reports on the launch of the new service, which took place on June 15, 2026.
