Greece is discussing the possibility of early parliamentary elections — Politico

Greece’s ruling party, New Democracy, is considering the possibility of calling early parliamentary elections as early as late September or in October of this year.

The main reason for these discussions is the party’s sharp decline in approval ratings amid ongoing corruption scandals

At the same time, the country’s top leadership is seeking to preempt the fragmented opposition, leaving it no time to unite.

New Democracy’s electoral standing has deteriorated significantly since the 2023 general election.

Public discontent was sparked by soaring inflation, large-scale revelations of fraud involving European Union funds, and the government’s botched response to the aftermath of the worst train disaster in Greek history.

Despite this, the conservatives still lead in the pre-election polls.

According to the latest polling data, “New Democracy” currently has the support of about 30% of voters. Its closest rival is the recently formed left-wing party “ELAS,” led by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, which is polling at 16%.

None of the current political forces is currently capable of securing the 37–40% needed to form a majority government on its own.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has publicly denied any rumors of a change in the election schedule and has stated his intention to serve out his full term.

“The elections will take place in the spring of 2027, as planned,” the head of government assured during his speech on the island of Rhodes.

However, within the party itself, the situation looks different, and government officials have already been given clear deadlines.

Four influential Greek politicians have confirmed that preparations for a possible fall election are underway behind closed doors.

“The prime minister has asked all ministries to complete their tasks by the end of August so that he has the opportunity to call early elections,” one government official said.

This scenario is also supported by the position of party strategists, who are recommending that the government act quickly.

Another senior Conservative official emphasized: “Several government officials have advised Mitsotakis to move the election up to an earlier date so that the opposition does not have time to reorganize.”

The opposition Socialist Party “PASOK” also regularly calls for an immediate vote, although its current poll numbers remain low. The prime minister’s team will make a final decision on the election date by the end of summer.
