Video: Death toll from the earthquakes in Venezuela has exceeded 1,700 people
The death toll from the series of powerful earthquakes that rocked Venezuela last Wednesday has risen to 1,719.
Jorge Rodríguez, the president of the National Assembly, announced this during a speech broadcast on national television.
According to him, in addition to the fatalities, 5,034 citizens sustained injuries of varying severity.
The scale of the natural disaster is catastrophic for the country, as the number of officially recognized victims has exceeded 22,600.
Rodríguez provided the latest data on damage to civilian infrastructure, noting that the disaster had devastated about 900 buildings. Of these, 189 were completely destroyed, and more than 650 sustained significant damage.
The tragic events began last Wednesday evening local time, when a series of earthquakes struck the country.
The epicenter of the activity was recorded after 1:00 a.m. Kyiv time on Thursday, and the active phase did not end until the morning of the same day.
According to seismologists, the magnitude of the tremors reached 7.2, 7.5, and 4.5 on the Richter scale.

The northern state of La Guaira, which was at the epicenter of the natural disaster, suffered the most damage and the greatest loss of life.
Currently, rescue services and government agencies are continuing to work around the clock to address the aftermath of the emergency.
Search and rescue operations are being hampered by widespread debris and damaged infrastructure in the hardest-hit areas.
