Wike says he will deliver Rivers and FCT for Tinubu

Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said he controls the political structures of Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and intends to secure President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2027 presidential election. He said this on 2 September while speaking with the media in Port Harcourt, Premium Times Nigeria reports.

Wike, who previously served as governor of Rivers State, rejected the notion that the state’s political structure can be controlled only by the incumbent governor. He called himself the “general commander of the political infantry” and said he considers it his duty to secure support for Tinubu in Rivers and the FCT.

Support for Tinubu

According to the outlet, Wike remains one of President Tinubu’s most influential political allies outside the ruling All Progressives Congress, although he retains membership in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. He has previously said that the president’s supporters in Rivers do not need the incumbent governor to mobilize votes, as his allies have a sufficient political network in the state.

The minister also denied that he is moving to Rivers State. According to him, he arrived there, among other reasons, to maintain contact with his political base and spend time with his family.

Sanctions in the FCT Administration

Wike also announced the suspension of a director of the Federal Capital Territory Administration who, he said, had allegedly issued commercial operators unauthorized temporary permits to use designated green areas. Another official, according to the minister, faced disciplinary action over the alleged reallocation of parkland under the pretext of security clearance of the area.

The sanctions followed flooding in some parts of Abuja, including along the airport road and in Lokogoma. Wike linked some of the problems to violations of Abuja’s master plan, development on waterways and road corridors, and promised to dismantle structures that obstruct waterways or road routes.
