Nigeria’s Vice President Shettima Confirms Support for WTO at BRICS Summit
Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima met with World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala during the BRICS leaders’ summit in New Delhi, India, and stated that Nigeria would continue supporting the WTO and the multilateral trading system.
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, Shettima stressed that no country can prosper in isolation from the global community. According to him, Nigeria will continue supporting the WTO in strengthening multilateralism and promoting a global system based on cooperation rather than isolation.
Statement on migration
The Nigerian vice president also described migration as an important factor in development, innovation and economic growth. He noted that immigrants have historically participated in building countries and cities.

As an example, Shettima cited the Nigerian diaspora. He stated that, according to a Pew Research Center analysis based on 2024 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 67% of Black immigrants born in Nigeria and aged 25 or older had at least a bachelor’s degree. According to him, this was the highest rate among the major groups of Black immigrants studied.
Plans at the BRICS summit
Shettima also praised Okonjo-Iweala’s work as head of the WTO. She became the first woman and the first representative of Africa in this position, and began her second four-year term in September 2025.
According to the publication, on 13 September Shettima planned to present BRICS leaders with opportunities for partnership and foreign investment in Nigeria. He was also expected to speak about reforms, infrastructure development and stimulating private sector-led growth.
