The eruption of Etna brought the airport in Sicily to a standstill
In Italy, the eruption of Mount Etna on Monday caused disruptions at Catania Airport. Volcanic ash emissions and difficult weather conditions disrupted normal operations at the airport, affecting flight schedules.
At Catania Airport—the main airport on the island of Sicily—arrivals and departures were suspended on Monday due to Mount Etna’s activity, at least until 6 p.m. local time.
Airlines advised passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Several dozen flights were diverted to Palermo.
On the morning of July 6, an aviation advisory warned that a major ash eruption was underway on Mount Etna, with the ash cloud potentially reaching a height of 4,500 meters.
