US Navy selects Lawrence as chief of information — Breaking Defense
The US Navy has selected Captain Tamara Lawrence as its new chief of information, who will coordinate public affairs programs. Lawrence, who had previously served in the position on an acting basis, will become an adviser to Acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Daryl Caudle, Breaking Defense reports.
Change in the selection process
The position of the US Navy’s chief of information has traditionally been held by a rear admiral. However, this time, an officer holding the rank of captain was selected for the role. As MS Now previously reported, the Navy changed the selection process, and the position was to be filled by a service member holding the O-6 rank.
The new selection process was open to US Navy captains on active duty and in the reserve, as well as Marine Corps colonels. Previously, only active-duty Navy captains with at least three years of experience were eligible to apply for the position; consideration was also given to their promotion to rear admiral. The Navy explained the change as an effort to broaden the pool of candidates.

Responsibilities and experience
According to the Navy, Lawrence will develop fleet-wide guidance on open and transparent communication with the public. Hung Cao said she would play an important role in shaping the Navy’s approach to communication now and in the future, and expressed confidence in her ability to positively influence the service.
Tamara Lawrence graduated from Duke University and holds postgraduate degrees from San Diego State University and the National War College. She previously served, among other assignments, at Naval Special Warfare Command and US Naval Forces Europe and Africa Joint Force.
