According to BFMTV, a well-known Ukrainian businessman, Vadym Yermolayev, along with his wife and 13-year-old son, were injured in an explosion that occurred on the evening of June 29 in an apartment building in Monaco.
The tragedy took place in the lobby of an apartment building on Rue Réverin-Per-Louis-Folla. According to BFMTV’s law enforcement sources, an unknown man left a backpack containing explosives inside the building and fled. Security cameras captured footage of the suspect, but he has not yet been found. The device detonated just as people were entering the lobby. Emergency responders arrived at the scene at 9:15 p.m. following an emergency call.
Currently, both adults, aged between 50 and 60, are in critical condition, while the condition of the injured boy is considered stable. A source close to the investigation confirmed to BFMTV that one of the victims was Vadym Yermolayev, who ranked 23rd on Forbes’ list of the 100 richest Ukrainians, although in 2019 he renounced his Ukrainian passport in favor of Cypriot citizenship. In addition to the three injured family members, four other people who were nearby were taken to the hospital in a state of shock.
The prosecutor’s office and Monaco’s Prime Minister Christophe Mirman have preliminarily classified the incident as a terrorist act. According to the prime minister, the explosive device was likely filled with bolts and shot for maximum damage, BFM reports.
