Tumu chiefs to return Mahama’s hat after Wa—Tumu road is completed
In Tumu, Ghana, traditional chiefs said they would return a hat to President John Dramani Mahama after the Wa—Tumu road is completed. During the head of state’s previous visit to Sissala, when he promised to repair the road, the chiefs presented him with traditional clothing—a smock—but deliberately kept the hat in Tumu.
Godfred Canton, spokesperson for the Tumu Traditional Council, explained to Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza that the headdress would be handed to the president when he arrives to inaugurate the completed road. This was reported by MyJoyOnline.
Work on the Wa—Tumu road
According to Canton, Sissala residents are already seeing the results of the road works. He noted that it is now possible to travel from Tumu to Wa and back in a single day. At the same time, the council representative called on the government to pay contractors so that they can remain at the sites and continue the work.

Canton also asked for the road leading to the paramount chief’s palace to be repaired. He stressed that access to the residence must be convenient for vehicles.
Expected completion date
During an inspection of the T-junction, Minister Agbodza called the section strategic and drew attention to trucks that, he said, could be arriving from Burkina Faso. He urged contractors to pay special attention to the junction.
Agbodza expressed hope that by the end of 2026 it would be possible to travel continuously on a good road between Wa and Tumu. He also said that Mahama’s government had paid road contractors more than any Ghanaian government over such a short period, mentioning among its financial commitments 10 billion Ghanaian cedis paid last month. The minister assured that completing the Wa—Tumu highway, local roads under the World Bank programme, and the border road during the first term in office would be the largest direct state investment in Sissala.
