US lawmakers call for new AI rules after researcher’s warnings

According to The Japan Times, US lawmakers this week called for new rules to regulate artificial intelligence. This came after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon publicly expressed concerns about the possibility that people could lose control of the technology.

Statements by the Anthropic researcher

Coxon accused OpenAI and Anthropic of competing to advance artificial intelligence without acting responsibly. He also said that he is leaving the AI industry.

His claims quickly spread on the social network X. Later, Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger also wrote on X that he supports Coxon’s assessment.

Lawmakers’ reaction

According to the publication, the reaction of US lawmakers was broader than after previous statements by OpenAI and Anthropic employees about AI safety concerns. Lawmakers who do not usually take a decisive part in such debates also joined the discussion on rules for governing the development of artificial intelligence.
