NACOC deputy director general announces steps to address gaps in Ghana — MyJoyOnline

Alexander Twum-Barima, deputy director general of Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), said the agency is taking steps to address institutional gaps inherited in the commission’s operations. MyJoyOnline reports.

NACOC official’s statement

According to Twum-Barima, over nearly two years in office, the commission’s leadership has identified numerous institutional gaps in its work. He claims that the previous period caused significant damage to the institution, rendering it virtually dysfunctional.

The official noted that the commission has already taken several steps to correct the identified shortcomings. He did not specify the particular gaps in NACOC’s work or the measures to address them.

Context of the cocaine seizure

The statement came amid attention to Ghana’s drug-control system after French customs seized nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at the port of Dunkirk. According to the outlet, the drugs were likely concealed in a container shipped from Ghana.

Twum-Barima spoke about the commission’s work on the JoyNews Newsfile programme on Saturday, September 25.
