Ghana parliament deputy speaker calls for end to partisan recruitment into security services
Second Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament Andrew Asiamah Amoako has called for an end to considering political affiliation when recruiting personnel into the country’s security services. In his view, candidates should be selected based on competence, qualifications and discipline, rather than loyalty to a political party.
Merit-based selection
As MyJoyOnline reports, the Member of Parliament for Fomena said that all Ghanaian citizens should receive equal opportunities to serve in the security sector on the basis of merit. According to him, recruitment decisions should take into account candidates’ ability to perform their duties effectively and comply with the standards established for the security services.

Statement at conference
Asiamah Amoako made the statement on September 3 in a comment to Citi News on the sidelines of the ninth REPAM-CDS conference on security governance. He warned that political considerations in recruitment could weaken Ghana’s security system and hinder the development of professional, effective and accountable institutions.
The official called on bodies responsible for recruiting personnel into the various security services to prioritize qualifications, competence and discipline. In his view, a merit-based recruitment system would contribute to the professionalization of these services and strengthen their ability to respond to threats to national security.
