Flight delays and cancellations in the US continue to cause chaos

On Wednesday morning, at least 894 flights were canceled in the United States, most of them from Chicago, Denver, and Atlanta airports, part of ongoing problems at American airfields. By 3 p.m. ET, another 1,256 flights were delayed. Chicago O'Hare International Airport was the leader in terms of the number of canceled flights, with 45 flights canceled.

The overall situation is improving as the week progresses, as Congress is close to ending the government shutdown. However, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted that delays could continue over the weekend if government funding remains unresolved. The fact that it will take about a week after the shutdown ends to resume normal airline operations is also a concern.

Airlines, in particular, are planning to reduce flight volumes by 8% on Thursday and 10% on Friday, pending a final decision on the reopening of the government. Optimistic forecasts suggest that normal flights could resume by Thanksgiving if the shutdown is resolved.
