France summons Iranian ambassador over ‘inhumane’ crackdown on protests
France has summoned Iran’s ambassador in Paris over what it described as an “unbearable and inhumane” crackdown by Iranian authorities on anti-government protests.
Speaking in parliament, France’s foreign minister said the condemnation had already been conveyed to Tehran and would be formally reiterated during the meeting with the ambassador.
“There can be no impunity for those who turned their weapons against peaceful protesters,” the minister said, stressing France’s opposition to the use of force against demonstrators.
At the same time, France itself has faced criticism in recent years for its own crackdown on pro-Palestinian protests, including efforts to restrict or criminalise activism under the banner of combating antisemitism.
