Zelenskyy confirmed Svyrydenko's nomination to serve as ambassador to the U.S.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that he had offered Yulia Svyrydenko the position of Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States. He made this statement in Kyiv during a press conference with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, according to “European Truth.”
According to the president, the position of Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. is one of the most important for the country, so it should be held by someone at the level of a deputy prime minister, minister, or prime minister. Zelenskyy noted that the offer to Svyrydenko was no secret.
“With all due respect to Olga Stefanishyna, it’s no secret that I had counted on and offered Yulia Svyrydenko the position of ambassador to the U.S.,” Zelenskyy said.
He cited Svyrydenko’s contribution to the conclusion of an economic agreement with the United States as one of the arguments in her favor. “Under Yulia’s leadership, an important agreement was concluded with the United States. This is the economic component that can and should bind us to the United States of America,” the president stated.
Zelenskyy also said that he is considering a new position for National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov. According to him, Umerov has proposals regarding his future work, specifically regarding the leadership of one of the agency’s departments.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported that Zelenskyy had tried to persuade former Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to accept the post of ambassador to the U.S., although she declined the offer. Liga reported that Umerov is one of the leading candidates for this position.
