Powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake near Ternate island causes fatality in Indonesia
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the small island of Ternate in Indonesia at a depth of 35 kilometres. The incident resulted in one death and one injury after a building collapsed in Manado, North Sulawesi province.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake caused panic across nearby areas. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), based in Hawaii, initially issued a tsunami warning threatening waves across a 1000-kilometre radius, including the Philippines and Malaysia.
However, the PTWC later revoked the alert, stating that the tsunami risk had been eliminated. Local search and rescue teams continue to assess the earthquake’s impact and assist victims.
Indonesia, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences strong earthquakes and tsunamis, making timely warnings critical for saving lives.
Despite the cancellation of the tsunami alert, authorities urge residents to remain cautious and stay in contact with emergency services.
