Ghana Women’s Movement announces Accra protest over intimidation claims — MyJoyOnline
The Ghana Women’s Movement plans to hold the Women’s Voices Matter demonstration in Accra on 29 September 2026, dedicated to protecting women’s rights, freedom of expression and political participation. Participants, including male supporters, are due to gather at 6:00 at Opera Square.
Claims of pressure on women
The movement said it was concerned about allegedly increasingly frequent cases of intimidation, arrests, pretrial detention and imprisonment of women in connection with their exercise of the right to freedom of expression. The organisers stressed that women have the right to participate in politics, criticise the government and demand accountability.
MyJoyOnline reports on the planned action. The movement’s statement says that participants do not accept a situation in which expressing one’s own opinion can lead to intimidation, arrest or imprisonment.

Petition to the vice president and demands
During the demonstration, representatives of the movement are to submit a petition to Ghana’s Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The document is expected to set out demands concerning dignity, equality, freedom of expression, women’s empowerment and equal treatment.
Key demands include an end to the intimidation and arrests of women, full implementation of the 2024 Affirmative Action Gender Equality Act, and ensuring women’s access to capital, business opportunities, jobs and other economic opportunities. The action’s coordinators include Janet Asana Nabla, Betty Akuffo Amoabeng, Elizabeth Sam, Akosua Asaa Manu and Grace Akosua Amoabeng.
