Omniva redirects packages to parcel lockers dozens of kilometers away
Due to the large volume of shipments, the Estonian company Omniva is rerouting some packages to parcel lockers in other towns—sometimes dozens of kilometers away from the delivery location chosen by the customer. The company says this approach is intended to help deliver packages faster, according to ERR News.
For example, this summer, a package ordered for Tapa was redirected to Rakvere—approximately 35 kilometers away. Another package, intended for the village of Treimani, was delivered to Häädemeeste, located about 20 kilometers away.
Lilian Peek, head of Omniva’s distribution and postal network in Estonia, explained that the situation is due to the large volume of packages and the automated sorting process. According to her, Omniva’s sorting line processes about 200,000 parcels daily, and 0.8% of them are redirected. As a result, about 1,600 customers per day receive their shipments at a location other than the one they specified.

Peek noted that customers can specify a first and second priority parcel lockers. When a parcel locker is full, operators can redirect the package to another location.
DPD Estonia Commercial Director Janek Kivimurd stated that delivery to the selected parcel locker is a priority for the company. According to him, approximately 1% of DPD shipments are rerouted due to a parcel locker unexpectedly reaching capacity or a technical malfunction. In such cases, the package is delivered to the nearest parcel locker, located no more than one and a half kilometers away.
Omniva customer Tarieli Lipartia, who runs a business in Telliskivi, Tallinn, said that the last time his package was redirected, it was sent to Tallinn Kaubamaja. He noted that there are closer Omniva post offices in Kristijone and Arsenal Keskus, and the company did not provide him with an explanation for the rerouting.
