An 11-year-old boy from Lviv received a kidney transplant from a deceased donor

In Lviv, doctors performed a kidney transplant on an 11-year-old boy; the donor was a 13-year-old teenager who died in an accident.

This was reported by the First Medical Association of Lviv.

Yuriy had suffered from nephrotic syndrome since early childhood, which developed following complications from tonsillitis. Over time, his condition worsened, and by the age of nine, his kidneys had completely lost their ability to function.

Hemodialysis became his only lifeline; the boy underwent the procedure for several hours every other day. The prolonged treatment took a toll on his body: the child stopped growing, his bones became brittle, and his heart was under significant strain.

A chance for salvation appeared in March, when the family was informed of the possibility of a transplant. The donor was a 13-year-old teenager who had died from a severe traumatic brain injury. His parents consented to posthumous donation, which made it possible to save the lives of four other children.

After the surgery, the boy began to recover quickly. In particular, for the first time in a long while, he was able to drink water without restriction, something that had previously been impossible due to his health condition.

The boy’s mother thanked the donor’s family and noted that she considers their act invaluable, as it gave her son a chance at a full life.

Chinese surgeons performed the first-ever ear-to-foot transplant on a patient following a workplace injury.

In the United States, the first patient to receive a pig kidney transplant has died.
