Lithuania's former prime minister is suspected of illicit enrichment

Former Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas has been officially charged with illicit enrichment. After being questioned by the special services, he confirmed that he had been designated a suspect. The investigation is ongoing. This was reported by LRT.

In Lithuania, law enforcement officials have charged former Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas with illegal enrichment. The politician himself confirmed that he had been charged following a visit to the Special Investigation Service (STT), where he arrived with his lawyer and spent several hours.

According to him, this is not his first contact with the investigation—he has previously given testimony several times as a special witness. Now, as he noted, the situation has changed, but the process is far from over. “I have already given testimony three times as a special witness. Today, there was no need for that. Now we have to wait for further procedural steps,” Paluckas said after leaving the agency.

He also added that no preventive measures have been applied to him at this time, though he officially has the status of a suspect. At the same time, the former prime minister stated that he hopes the case will be closed, but acknowledged the possibility of further developments, including the filing of charges. “The investigation will continue, and then either the suspicions will be dropped, which I hope for, or charges will be filed,” he noted.

Paluckas declined to comment specifically on the possibility of resigning his parliamentary seat due to the situation.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the politician’s wife is also under suspicion in the case. Investigators believe that between 2010 and 2024, the couple may have acquired assets worth approximately 345,000 euros using funds of unknown origin that cannot be substantiated by legal income.

The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies are examining all circumstances surrounding the origin of the funds and possible violations of financial legislation.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys stated that the United States is pressuring the Lithuanian government to resume the transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers through the country’s territory.
