Germany is taking a closer look at Ukrainian missile technology

According to representatives of the Ukrainian defense company Fire Point, Germany is considering replacing American Tomahawk missiles with Ukrainian "Flamingo" missiles, which could be one of the most significant signals of a shift in Europe’s approach to armaments. At the same time, the parties are discussing joint projects in the fields of drones, air defense, and missile technology, the FT reports.

The idea that Ukrainian missile developments could end up at the center of Germany’s defense plans sounded like a hypothesis until recently, but industry representatives are now openly discussing it in public. Fire Point co-founder and chief designer Denys Shtilerman stated that Berlin is not merely interested in Ukrainian technologies but is reportedly considering using them as an alternative to American long-range systems.

According to him, the German side is showing interest in several areas at once—from the FP-1 and FP-2 strike drones to long-range missile systems, where the “Flamingo” has become a key topic. “The German government is purchasing our FP-1 and FP-2 drones for its armed forces… they are considering replacing Tomahawk missiles with Flamingo,” Stilerman noted.

Fire Point also confirms that this is not just about procurement, but also about deeper integration of technologies into European defense systems. In particular, the company is working on a missile defense shield concept called “Freya,” which involves the use of the FP-7 interceptor.

Separately, the topic of cooperation with the German defense sector is also being discussed publicly. During his visit to Kyiv, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized that Ukrainian technologies demonstrate an “extraordinary level of development” and could serve as the basis for joint ventures in the fields of drones, air defense, and electronic warfare.

According to reports, Fire Point has already signed technology agreements with the German company Diehl Defence, although these details have not been officially confirmed. The company, however, emphasizes that work on joint defense solutions is ongoing, and Europe is gradually transitioning to a more integrated security model, where Ukrainian developments can play a significant role.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting in Kyiv with representatives of the German delegation, during which the main focus was on strengthening air defense and protecting Ukraine from Russian attacks. They also discussed new formats of security cooperation and the development of defense technologies. Additionally, they discussed Ukraine’s European integration and political support from Germany.
