Putin calls for the mass deployment of war veterans to factories

Vladimir Putin has stated that wounded veterans of the war against Ukraine should be more actively involved in Russia’s industrial sector. The aim is to leverage their experience to develop the defense and technology sectors, according to Russian media reports.

In Russia, there is increasing discussion at the state level about how to integrate wounded veterans of the war against Ukraine into the economy, and this issue has now reached the level of a direct directive from the president, who publicly stated the need to more actively place people with disabilities acquired on the front lines into industrial jobs, particularly in the defense sector. The speech was accompanied by rhetoric about “technological sovereignty” and the domestic production of critical goods.

Speaking at the congress of the Russian Union of Machine Builders, Vladimir Putin stated that war veterans could allegedly become an important resource for industry, and called on the government and business leaders to more actively involve them in the workforce. “I ask the government, relevant ministries, and company executives to actively facilitate the recruitment of such people into the domestic defense industry and other industrial sectors,” he said, adding that these are “people with extensive experience who know how to quickly find solutions to the tasks at hand.”

According to Putin, these are people returning from the front lines after being wounded, who, in his view, can be useful in the country’s manufacturing processes and technological development. At the same time, according to estimates by international analysts, as of the end of 2024, hundreds of thousands of Russians had already sustained severe injuries during combat operations, a significant portion of them with serious consequences, including amputations, which creates a massive social and economic problem within the country.
