China is preparing to double its imports of Russian LNG subject to sanctions — Reuters
China is preparing a second terminal to receive liquefied natural gas from the Russian Arctic LNG 2 project, which is subject to sanctions. This will allow for a significant increase in Russian LNG imports ahead of the winter season.
The new terminal, operated by PipeChina, is located in Longkou, Shandong Province, and, according to the agency’s sources, will be ready to receive shipments by October 2026. Previously, deliveries from Arctic LNG 2 were received exclusively through the terminal in Beihai.
According to Kpler’s estimates, since August 2025, China has received 41 shipments of Russian LNG through Beihai, totaling approximately 2.6 million metric tons. The availability of a second terminal will significantly expand China’s capacity to receive gas from the Russian project, which is subject to strict international sanctions.
Last year, China imported 7.57 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas from Russia, remaining the world’s largest buyer of this resource.
According to Reuters, Novatek, the main owner of Arctic LNG 2, has also recently stepped up its recruitment efforts in China.
