Ukraine's Ambassador to NATO Calls for the Alliance's Rebirth — Politico
Alona Getmanchuk, Ukraine’s ambassador to NATO, expressed her belief that the current turbulence in relations within the North Atlantic Alliance could serve as a catalyst for its renewal.
In comments to Politico, she noted that the critical statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump should not be seen as a harbinger of the organization’s collapse.
“Instead of talking about the collapse of NATO, I would prefer to talk about the Alliance’s rebirth,” the diplomat emphasized on Friday, April 3.
She expressed cautious optimism, suggesting that a deep crisis could open new windows of opportunity for Ukraine’s full integration into Western defense structures.
Hetmanchuk is convinced that Ukraine’s involvement will help NATO become much more effective, innovative, and capable of effectively countering the Russian threat.
In her view, Ukraine’s experience will make the Alliance “deadly” to the aggressor, which is in line with the current security challenges on the continent.
The ambassador responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s description of NATO as a “paper tiger.”
She noted that although the Kremlin has been trying for decades to undermine the bloc’s unity, Russia has not yet dared to launch a direct armed attack against any of the Alliance’s member states.
The diplomat emphasized that Article 5 of the Washington Treaty remains a “model to follow” in the realm of collective security guarantees.
At the same time, she acknowledged that Kyiv’s trust in the alliance has been somewhat shaken by NATO’s indecisive behavior in the early years of the full-scale invasion.
As a reminder, NATO does not believe Trump’s statements about the U.S. leaving the alliance are serious.
