In recent days, the most critical situation has developed west of Madrid. Firefighters have managed to bring the blaze under control; however, according to the prime minister, efforts are still ongoing. “We have difficult hours ahead of us. At the same time, the latest data show that last night was very positive in terms of the fire’s progression and efforts to contain it,” Sánchez said.
The prime minister spoke at the field command post of the rescue workers operating in the area of the massive fire. He thanked the firefighters, the military, and all the emergency services that have been battling the flames for several days. Sánchez emphasized that the problem extends far beyond individual fires. According to him, Spain and Portugal are increasingly suffering from extreme weather. “The entire Iberian Peninsula is feeling the effects of the climate crisis very acutely,” the head of government stated.
He noted that this is not just about large-scale wildfires. According to the prime minister, countries in the region are increasingly facing storms, abnormal precipitation, heavy snowfall, and other natural phenomena that are becoming more intense. Despite positive progress in fighting the fires, authorities are not yet ready to declare them fully extinguished. Rescue workers continue to operate in areas where there is still a risk of the flames reigniting.
The Spanish government is urging residents to follow the recommendations of emergency services and monitor official announcements until the situation has fully stabilized, according to The Guardian.
