A baby born weighing 1,060 grams was discharged from Okhmatdyt

Doctors at the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialized Hospital helped care for a severely premature infant born at 29 weeks of gestation, weighing just 1,060 grams and measuring 38 centimeters in length. The child’s condition at birth was critical.

Mark spent the first weeks of his life at a perinatal center, but due to feeding difficulties and suspected intestinal problems, he was transferred to Okhmatdyt.

The child showed signs of partial intestinal obstruction, as well as episodes of seizures.

A comprehensive examination was conducted at the hospital, which included ultrasound and X-ray diagnostics, irrigography, as well as consultations with a number of specialists—pediatric surgeons, a neurologist, a urologist, a geneticist, and others.

Doctors determined that the condition was caused by significant morphofunctional immaturity of the body and the nervous regulation of the intestines, rather than a congenital surgical pathology. This allowed them to avoid surgical intervention.

As explained by Tetyana Orlova, head of the Department of Intensive and Post-Intensive Care and Nursing for Premature Infants:

“For a long time, the intestines were not receiving sufficient signals and did not begin to function. Together with the surgeons, we even considered the possibility of surgical treatment, but thanks to the team’s experience, we were able to manage this period conservatively. We inserted a central venous catheter, selected a therapeutic diet, and for nearly a month, the child received total parenteral nutrition. Eventually, we were able to gradually transition to enteral feeding.”

Eventually, the child’s condition began to stabilize: spontaneous breathing resumed, a sucking reflex appeared, and digestion normalized.

The family-integrated care model and the “kangaroo care” method—skin-to-skin contact with the parents—played a crucial role in his recovery.

After 2.5 months of treatment, Mark reached a weight of nearly 2.8 kg, began to breathe and feed on his own, and was discharged home. The boy’s mother noted that the family felt constant support from the medical staff and was ready for this new stage of life.

This was reported by the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialized Hospital.

Previously, the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialized Hospital, the State Emergency Service, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces jointly saved the life of 8-month-old Roma from Volyn, who urgently needed a liver transplant.

Previously, at the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialized Hospital, doctors and staff honored the memory of 13-year-old Ivan, who became an organ donor after his death and saved the lives of four patients.

Thanks to the Ukrainian Bone Marrow Donor Registry, a genetic match was found for 34-year-old Zinoviy from Kyiv, who had been battling aplastic anemia for a long time. Unfortunately, there were no suitable donors among the patient’s relatives. However, the registry identified a 21-year-old man who donated his hematopoietic cells.
