Dua Lipa's wedding in Palermo sparked a tourism boom in Sicily
Following the three-day wedding of British singer Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner in Palermo, interest in Sicily among tourists has surged.
According to analysts, following the event, the number of search queries about Sicily significantly exceeded interest in Lake Como, which had long been one of the most popular destinations in Italy.
Specifically, over the past month, users made about 2.4 million search queries regarding Sicily, while Lake Como garnered about 225,000 queries, which is 7% less than last year.
Following the news about the wedding, interest in specific celebration venues also surged significantly:
- Villa Igea in Palermo, where Dua Lipa stayed, saw a 306% increase in search queries over the past 90 days.
- Villa Valguarnera, where the ceremony took place, saw a 277% increase in search queries over the course of a week.
- Palazzo Gangi, which also hosted wedding events, saw a 199% increase in interest.
These locations are popular historical sites: in particular, Palazzo Gangi is a private residence with limited access, which is only possible through guided tours or special events.
The three-day celebration, which some media outlets have already dubbed the “wedding of the year,” began in the historic center of Palermo with several private parties.
The ceremony took place on June 6 at 5:00 p.m. at Villa Valguarnera, where the couple exchanged vows in a gazebo. Elton John performed "Your Song" for the guests, and the menu was prepared by Michelin-starred chef Tony Lo Coco.
The celebration took place under heightened security measures, including the use of anti-drone systems and strict confidentiality rules for staff and vendors. Photography and videography were prohibited on the event grounds.
It is also reported that streets in central Palermo were temporarily closed, which caused discontent among some local residents who protested against the private use of public space.
