Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant on the Brink of a Blackout: IAEA Calls for a Ceasefire

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been operating on a single backup power line for nearly two months, posing serious risks to nuclear safety.

This was stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

According to him, since March 24, the plant has been receiving electricity only through the 330 kV “Ferosplavna-1” backup line, as the main 750 kV “Dniprovska” line has been disconnected.

During this period, the ZNPP has experienced three complete outages of external power supply. The IAEA is currently negotiating with Ukraine and Russia regarding a temporary local ceasefire to carry out necessary repairs.

The agency’s team also reported drone attacks near the plant and in Energodar, where most of its employees live. According to available information, up to 40 drones may have been used during one of the attacks.

Grossi emphasized that the presence of drones and explosive devices near a nuclear facility is unacceptable, as it significantly increases the risk of a nuclear incident.

The Zaporizhzhia NPP recorded its 15th blackout since the start of the occupation.

Earlier, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant resumed operations on Ukraine’s power grid after a one-and-a-half-hour interruption in external power supply.
