BMW plans to add an SUV above the X7 in the US — Motor1

BMW plans to add a new SUV to its US lineup that will be positioned above the BMW X7. At the same time, the automaker intends to reduce the number of models and variants in its global lineup, Motor1 reports.

The company has not yet named the model, its price, dimensions, or market launch timing. BMW describes the future vehicle as an additional offering in the Sports Activity Vehicle lineup, developed specifically for US buyers. The decision is linked to strong demand for large SUVs in the United States: BMW's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is currently operating at full capacity.

Reduction of the model range

BMW said it seeks to create a more focused product portfolio that will better meet the needs of individual markets. The company plans to review and reduce the number of available vehicle variants, focusing on models with the best long-term returns in each region.

BMW specifically named the 2 Series Active Tourer among the models that may be cut. The manufacturer also plans to use artificial intelligence more broadly in vehicle development, production, sales, and after-sales service.

China and Neue Klasse technologies

China will remain an important part of BMW's strategy. With the introduction of Neue Klasse technologies, the manufacturer wants to increase local production of high-volume models. By 2030, BMW aims for at least 95% of the vehicles it sells in China to be manufactured there and developed with the needs of Chinese customers in mind.

Next year, BMW also plans to introduce the first model under the BMW Alpina brand, inspired by the 7 Series. It is expected to occupy a position between BMW's core lineup and Rolls-Royce. For Europe, the company is preparing a fully electric entry-level model for 2028, which may become the new 1 Series and will receive Neue Klasse technologies.
