Ford plans to begin production of the Fathom electric pickup truck in 2027
Ford plans to begin production of the Fathom electric pickup truck at its assembly plant in Louisville, Kentucky, in the first quarter of 2027. The plant, which is over 70 years old, has been retooled to produce only electric vehicles, according to The Verge.
The first Fathom vehicles produced will be prototypes. The team at the Louisville plant has already moved on to the stage of preparing production equipment. Plant employees, together with specialists from Ford’s New Vehicle Development Center in Dearborn, Michigan, are hand-assembling the prototypes. The company also plans to involve operators who participated in the development of the electric vehicle in the production process.
Before retrofitting the plant, workers dismantled the heavy equipment used to manufacture internal combustion engine vehicles, including the Escape and Lincoln Corsair. Over the course of several weeks, thousands of metric tons of steel and heavy machinery were removed from the facility. According to Ford, by February, only an empty shell remained of the production complex.

The $28,000 Fathom will be the first model built on the new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. Ford says the system is designed to increase range through aerodynamics while simultaneously reducing production costs, enabling the company to produce profitable electric vehicles.
Ford also reported that it has retrofitted its Louisville plant in less than a year. In total, the company is investing $5 billion to create 4,000 jobs at this facility and at the BlueOval battery complex in Michigan. According to the company, the manufacturing process for the new model will also differ from traditional methods.
