Ford restores unique Mustang V10 Boss 351 prototype
Ford’s Heritage Fleet team has restored a unique Mustang V10 Boss 351 prototype that had stood unused for many years and nearly disappeared. The vehicle was created around 25 years ago as a secret experimental project by a group of Ford engineers, Motor1 reports.
Several members of its original development team took part in restoring the car. After a long period of inactivity, specialists checked the vehicle’s electronics and other systems before conducting tests on a dynamometer. The prototype is now part of the Heritage Fleet collection.
Power at the wheels
During dyno testing, the Mustang produced more than 510 horsepower at the wheels and 480 lb-ft of torque, or 651 Nm. Ford does not provide a crankshaft power figure. Motor1 notes that, assuming roughly 15% drivetrain losses, the engine’s output can be estimated at nearly 600 hp.

V10 based on the Modular V8
The engineers did not use the Triton V10 from Ford’s truck models. Instead, they based the project on the 4.6-liter four-valve, dual-overhead-cam Modular V8 from the Mustang Cobra R. They added two cylinders to its architecture, combining components from two 4.6-liter engines and developing new cylinder heads and camshafts.
The result was an all-aluminum 5.8-liter V10 with a short piston stroke, dual overhead camshafts, and high-revving characteristics. The project used two Triton electronic control units to manage the engine, with each controlling its own cylinder bank. Power was sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
