McLaren has not decided on the material for its first SUV — Motor1
In the United Kingdom, McLaren confirmed its intention to launch its first SUV, but has not yet decided whether the model will use a carbon-fiber or aluminum structure. Production of the hybrid SUV is expected before the end of the decade.
Material choice
As Motor1 reports, McLaren Chief Operating Officer Michael Straughan told Top Gear magazine that carbon fiber is part of the brand's DNA. At the same time, the manufacturer is not yet ready to make a final choice in favor of this material, as its use for a vehicle of this size involves technical challenges.
If McLaren cannot use a carbon structure for a large SUV, aluminum will be the alternative. The company is known for its focus on lightweight structures: its three-seat F1 model once helped popularize the use of carbon fiber in road cars.

Competitors and platform
McLaren's first SUV will target the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX, pointing to a more traditional high-performance SUV format. According to Straughan, the Ferrari Purosangue does not necessarily belong to the same group of competitors, as Ferrari's approach differs.
The model will be built on a platform that McLaren is developing independently rather than borrowing from another automaker. The vehicle will also receive an in-house-developed hybrid powertrain. The company has not yet announced a final decision on the structural material.
