Porsche creates cell with fully recycled cathode material — Motor1

In Germany, Porsche, together with Cylib, has produced a battery cell whose cathode material consists entirely of recycled lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese. The cells produced on a pilot line are currently undergoing comprehensive operational testing, Motor1 reports.

Porsche battery recycling

Porsche and Cylib launched a pilot project to recycle high-voltage batteries in 2025. Since May 2026, used high-voltage batteries from Porsche centers in Germany have been sent for recycling using Cylib's water-based technology.

According to Porsche, the recovered lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese are recorded in a special material tracking system. Porsche Executive Board Member for Procurement Joachim Scharnagl called the creation of cells from fully recycled raw materials an important technological milestone.

Cylib specializes in returning materials from old batteries to the production cycle. This involves not only extracting metals, but also purifying them to a level that makes it possible to use the materials in the production of cathodes for new battery cells.

Use of materials from 2028

Porsche said it plans to use the recovered raw materials in the production of new battery cells starting in 2028. Until then, the company will continue testing the technology: pilot cells are already undergoing operational tests.

The project is being implemented ahead of tighter European Union battery requirements. EU regulations already set minimum recovery targets for cobalt, copper, lead, nickel and lithium. From February 18, 2027, a digital battery passport will become mandatory for electric vehicle traction batteries, light means of transport batteries and industrial batteries with a capacity above 2 kWh that are placed on the EU market or put into service.

Such an electronic record must contain data on the chemical composition, the battery's condition throughout its life cycle, and the share of recycled materials in the battery pack. According to Motor1, the passport will cover about 71 standardized parameters.
