Toyota to launch hydrogen Hilux pickup in 2028 — InsideEVs
Toyota plans to bring a hydrogen version of the midsize Hilux pickup to the European market in 2028. The Hilux FCEV will run on fuel cells and complement the pickup's electric and diesel mild-hybrid variants, InsideEVs reports.
Range and towing
Toyota expects the Hilux FCEV to have a range of up to 400 kilometers with its hydrogen tanks fully filled. The model's target towing capacity is up to 2,500 kilograms. By comparison, the electric version of the Hilux has a claimed range of 257 kilometers and can tow up to 2,000 kilograms.
According to the publication, the production Hilux FCEV will use a powertrain similar to that installed in the Toyota Mirai sedan. Toyota estimates that hydrogen refueling will take about five minutes. Charging the electric Hilux from 10% to 80% takes approximately 30 minutes.

Previous tests
Toyota unveiled the first Hilux H2 prototype in 2022, and in 2024 the company tested a fleet of ten vehicles. The test pickups had rear-wheel drive, three hydrogen tanks in the frame, and a lithium-ion battery located beneath the cargo bed. Their range was estimated at up to 600 kilometers.
At the same time, the availability of hydrogen vehicles in Europe is limited by infrastructure. According to the European Hydrogen Observatory, 179 hydrogen refueling stations operate in Europe and the United Kingdom. European Union countries have 1.16 million public charging points for electric vehicles.
It has not yet been specified whether the production Hilux FCEV will retain rear-wheel drive and whether it will receive an all-wheel-drive version with two electric motors.
