Tesla FSD could be allowed in Finland after EU committee decision — YLE News

Tesla vehicles with the FSD (Supervised) system could appear on roads in Finland as early as October if an EU committee approves its use. At the same time, Jukka Jugola, a specialist at the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, noted that it is not yet certain whether a vote on the matter will take place on October 6, YLE News reports.

The FSD (Supervised) system enables a vehicle to independently travel to a destination set by the driver. The driver must continuously monitor traffic and take control if they notice a problem. The system also monitors the driver's actions inside the cabin.

A decision for the entire EU

According to Jugola, a positive committee decision would allow the system to be used throughout the European Union. It would also launch the process of bringing EU regulations to a level that permits such systems without the use of special exemptions.

Traficom reported as early as summer that it was studying the possibility of approving FSD (Supervised) in Finland. In April, the Netherlands had already approved the use of Tesla under an exemption procedure. Finnish authorities assessed the technology's operation and potential problems associated with it together with the manufacturer, the Dutch authority that granted the approval, and other authorities.

The driver must monitor traffic

Tesla's system uses eight cameras, one of which monitors the driver inside the cabin. The Supervised designation means that a person is not relieved of the obligation to monitor the vehicle. In Turku, test Teslas with FSD (Supervised) have already been used under a special permit from Traficom.

Over the past ten years, a number of accidents involving Teslas with FSD have been reported. Many of them were linked to drivers losing attention.

In Finland, the Ford BlueCruise system is also offered for certain models. It allows drivers not to keep their hands on the steering wheel only on motorways, continuously monitors driver attentiveness, and switches off in the event of significant deterioration in weather conditions.
