In the US, GM confirms its long-term commitment to electric vehicles
In the United States, General Motors CEO Mary Barra said that electric vehicles remain the company’s long-term goal, although GM will continue selling gasoline-powered models and hybrids for years. By 2030, EVs could account for about 40–50% of the automaker’s sales, Motor1 reports.
GM’s long-term goal
In an interview with Fortune, Barra called electric vehicles GM’s “end goal.” According to her, the transition will take decades rather than conclude within a defined near-term deadline. She also described EVs as the company’s strategic direction despite short-term market fluctuations.
GM continues to invest in batteries, software, and charging infrastructure. At the same time, the company plans to develop hybrid models alongside EVs. According to the publication, this approach explains the cancellation of the electric truck program without abandoning electrification overall.

Regulation and charging network
Barra linked the pace of EV adoption to government policy. She noted that China and Europe introduced EVs more quickly due to more active government policies on emissions standards and charging infrastructure, while US policy has changed unevenly.
The GM chief also called charging infrastructure a practical obstacle to accelerating the transition. According to her, federal funding helped expand the network of charging stations in the United States, but delays in obtaining permits are slowing the launch of new facilities.
The company relies on profitable sales of pickups and SUVs during the transition to new technologies. After Barra’s statements, GM shares rose: investors viewed her remarks as confirmation that the company’s electric strategy remains in place, although timelines and targets may be adjusted.
