Volkswagen will not abandon small-displacement engines

The German automaker Volkswagen has decided to continue producing three-cylinder engines for small cars, despite earlier plans to phase them out.

This decision became possible after the EU eased its environmental requirements.

This refers to the 1.0 TSI engine of the EA211 series, which can continue to be used in subcompact models, including the Polo and T-Cross.

The company explained that it had previously considered phasing out these engines due to strict emissions standards, but the final version of the EU7 standard allowed it to reconsider this decision.

Currently, three-cylinder engines have already disappeared from the compact car class—such as the Golf, Octavia, Leon, and Audi A3. There, they have been replaced by less powerful versions of 1.5-liter four-cylinder engines.

At the same time, these engines remain relevant in the small car segment—they are installed in the Polo, Fabia, and Ibiza models.

Experts note that retaining the 1.0 TSI will prevent price increases for base-model cars, as without it, buyers would have to opt for more expensive, larger-displacement engines.
