Volvo will launch Safety Coach to evaluate driving performance and provide insurance offers
Volvo will begin rolling out the optional Safety Coach app in Sweden and Norway, which will assess drivers’ behavior behind the wheel. A high safety score could give car owners access to personalized insurance offers with lower premiums, according to InsideEVs.
The app will analyze driving data from the previous two weeks. Specifically, the system will take into account braking, acceleration, and cornering. Based on this data, it will generate a safety score that Volvo’s partner insurance companies can use to make offers tailored to driving style.
The rollout of Safety Coach in Sweden and Norway is set to begin this month. The in-car app will be available for most 2020 model year Volvo models and newer. In Europe, it is compatible with vehicles equipped with the Google-based infotainment system. It will also be integrated into the Volvo Cars mobile app.

In Sweden and Norway, drivers who agree to share data on their driving behavior will be able to take advantage of a special offer from the insurance company Volvia. Going forward, Volvo plans to launch Safety Coach in the U.S. and other European countries alongside insurance offers. The company has not yet named its U.S. insurance partner.
Volvo Cars developed the app in collaboration with Cambridge Mobile Telematics. Drivers will be able to manage their data independently: after connecting to the service, they can stop sharing information with insurance partners and later give their consent to share it again.
Mikael Ljung Aust, a driver behavior expert at Volvo Cars, stated that adhering to the expected speed range and avoiding sudden maneuvers make the car’s behavior more predictable for other road users and reduce the risk of collisions.
