Kyiv was shrouded in thick smog with a pungent smell of burning

Kyiv was shrouded in thick smog with a pungent smell of burning

On Friday afternoon, June 26, thick, dense smog blanketed the Ukrainian capital.

Residents in virtually all parts of the city are complaining en masse about a persistent and pungent smell of smoke, as well as significantly reduced visibility on the roads.

Currently, relevant agencies and experts are investigating the exact causes of this widespread air pollution.

Due to the sharp deterioration in air quality, experts are urging Kyiv residents to exercise caution. The Main Directorate of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection and environmental agencies are asking people to refrain from taking long walks.

If you notice a strong odor, we recommend closing your windows and limiting your time outdoors.

People with chronic respiratory conditions, those with allergies, and the elderly are advised to pay special attention to their well-being.

Monitoring systems continue to record pollution levels in real time. The official causes of the haze—whether fires in the region’s ecosystems or specific meteorological conditions—are being determined.

It should be noted that a heat wave from Western Europe is currently moving toward Ukraine. In some areas, forecasters predict temperatures will rise to 34–36 degrees.

A large-scale high-pressure system has already brought scorching temperatures of +45 degrees to France, significantly exacerbating the fire hazard.

The hottest days in Ukraine will be June 29–30, when daytime highs in the Kyiv region will reach 35–38 degrees.

Such weather conditions are extreme for the region and could worsen the environmental situation in the metropolis.

Such a prolonged rise in temperature significantly increases the risk of spontaneous combustion in peat bogs and forested areas around the capital.
