An international project to save St. Nicholas Church is being launched in Kyiv

St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv has been given a new chance at salvation—during an international conference in Gdańsk, an agreement was signed to provide technical support for its restoration, which includes erecting scaffolding and beginning priority work. The project is estimated to cost approximately 1 million euros, and its implementation will mark the start of a large-scale restoration of the historic site, which has long been in urgent need of assistance.

This was announced during the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2026, where an international initiative to save one of the capital’s most famous sacred sites was officially launched. As part of the agreement, a contract was signed between the Polish company Polimex Mostostal SA and the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Nicholas in Kyiv. The document provides for the supply of scaffolding and necessary equipment, which will allow emergency repair and restoration work to begin.

After signing the documents, the parish priest, Father Pavlo Vyshkovsky, noted the symbolic coincidence and remarked: “Times change, but the church was, is, and will be. And it must be restored.” Under the terms of the agreement, the scaffolding is provided for indefinite use—until the restoration is fully completed. The Polish side will cover the costs of manufacturing, transporting, and assembling the structures, while the Ukrainian side will secure the necessary permits for their installation and use.

The total cost of the technical phase of the project, including logistics and installation, is estimated at approximately 1 million euros. A separate letter of intent was also signed to establish an international initiative group that will work on the further restoration of the church as part of the “Rescue Coalition for St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv” project.

The parish emphasizes that the current agreements are only the first practical step in the long process of restoring the sanctuary. Ahead lie emergency repair work, the involvement of international experts, and coordination with government agencies regarding all necessary decisions and permits. St. Nicholas Church remains one of Kyiv’s most famous architectural and spiritual landmarks, and its condition has long been a cause for concern among experts; so the launch of international support is viewed as a crucial step in preserving the building for future generations. This was reported by the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Nicholas in Kyiv.

Ukraine and Switzerland have agreed to begin priority restoration work on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra following the Russian attack. The focus is now on the Assumption Cathedral, which has been damaged and requires urgent protection from further destruction.
