After the Russian attack, cleanup efforts continue at the polluted lake in Kyiv
Work is continuing in Kyiv to clean up the oil spill in Lake Kyrylivske following the massive Russian attack on July 2. Experts have been cleaning the lake for a second week and have used more than 500 kilograms of a special sorbent.
According to the Kyiv City State Administration, a specialized Mobitrac amphibious vehicle has begun removing contaminated reeds that have absorbed the oil-water emulsion. Rescuers from the State Emergency Service are working continuously with three skimmers to pump out the oil-water emulsion.
The municipal enterprise “Pleso” takes weekly water samples and monitors the condition of Lake Kyrylivske and Lake Yordanske.
Scientists from the Institute of Hydrobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine have also joined the effort to address the pollution. They are studying the water, bottom sediments, vegetation, and fauna to determine the next steps for restoring the ecosystem.
The Kyiv City State Administration noted that efforts are already shifting from emergency response to the systematic restoration of the body of water. Their goal is not only to eliminate the effects of the pollution but also to restore the lake’s healthy ecosystem.
