Klitschko described how Kyiv is helping residents in the wake of Russian shelling

In Kyiv, following Russian shelling, the city is providing financial assistance to affected families and restoring the most severely damaged buildings. The authorities are also providing temporary housing and rental subsidies while restoration work is underway. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko discussed this on the “Kyiv” television channel.

The city has already developed a clear procedure for affected families, and each case is reviewed promptly to ensure people are not left without support. “The procedure is in place. We are providing assistance to all those affected. We are paying 10,000 hryvnias to each affected family. We pay 40,000 hryvnias as a one-time payment. And for those whose homes are severely damaged and uninhabitable, we are paying families 20,000 hryvnias for rental housing until the house is rebuilt,” the mayor noted.

He added that in addition to cash payments, the city is offering people temporary housing from the city’s emergency housing fund; however, most families are opting for compensation so they can rent housing on their own in the neighborhoods they are accustomed to. “But, as a rule, people take the money to rent an apartment in their own neighborhood,” Klitschko explained.

The mayor also reported that following the attack on May 14, damage was recorded at 29 different locations in the capital. In the areas with the most severe destruction, relief headquarters were quickly set up so that people could promptly receive the necessary support.

According to city authorities, since the start of the full-scale war, approximately 3,100 residential buildings in Kyiv have sustained varying degrees of damage. Some have already been restored, while others are undergoing repairs or complete reconstruction. “We are doing everything we can to help people in this situation. We are restoring housing. In some places, windows may be broken; in others, the damage is less severe and can be fixed more quickly. And there are buildings (fewer in number) where the destruction is significant,” Klitschko said.

According to him, the city has already rebuilt about 30 of the most damaged buildings, and more than 30 others are currently being restored. Kyiv has allocated 574 million hryvnias for this work this year, which allows for the continued restoration of residential infrastructure despite the extensive destruction.
