A fatal traffic accident in Kyiv claimed the lives of four people
An investigation is underway in Kyiv into a horrific accident on Chokolivsky Boulevard, where a Mercedes crashed into an underground pedestrian underpass at high speed. Four people were killed in the tragedy, including a 12-year-old boy.
As law enforcement officials discovered, the driver had previously violated traffic rules on multiple occasions and had already been involved in four traffic accidents.
The accident occurred on Chokolivsky Boulevard in Kyiv. According to preliminary findings from the investigation, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was traveling at high speed and lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off the road and literally crashed into an underground pedestrian underpass, where people were present at the time.
The impact was so severe that the car sustained serious damage. Rescuers had to extricate the driver. Two men, a woman, and a 12-year-old boy died at the scene. Three other people sustained injuries of varying severity. Medical personnel treated them and transported them to hospitals. The condition of the victims is currently being assessed.
According to law enforcement, a 49-year-old resident of the Kherson region was behind the wheel. He was also hospitalized after the accident. The man is currently under medical supervision. Investigators determined that the driver had previously come to the attention of the police on multiple occasions for traffic violations.
In particular, he has been brought to administrative liability for speeding on multiple occasions. Additionally, he has already been involved in four traffic accidents, two of which occurred this year alone.
Law enforcement authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the fatal accident. The case is being investigated under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of traffic safety rules resulting in the death of several people.
The Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the proceedings. Investigators continue to establish all the circumstances of the tragedy. In particular, they are examining the vehicle’s speed, its technical condition, and other factors that could have led to the accident.
The tragedy on Chokolivsky Boulevard has become one of the most high-profile traffic accidents in the capital in recent times. The death of a child and the fact that the car ended up right in an underpass—a place people usually consider safe—caused particular shock among the public. The investigation is ongoing.
