In Zakarpattia, a court handed down a sentence to a 31-year-old female driver who caused a fatal traffic accident on the Kyiv–Chop highway. The woman was sentenced to 8 years in prison for the accident, which killed a 48-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son. She was also banned from driving for three years.

Following a public indictment by the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the court found the 31-year-old driver guilty of violating traffic rules, which resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to another. The accident occurred on the Kyiv–Chop highway. According to the investigation, the woman, driving a Nissan Pathfinder, veered into the oncoming lane, where she collided with a car carrying a family from Vinnytsia.

The family was returning home after a vacation. The husband was driving, his 48-year-old wife was sitting next to him, and their 13-year-old son was in the back seat. The prosecutor’s office noted that the victims’ car was traveling in its own lane, and all passengers were wearing seat belts. Due to the severe impact, the boy died at the scene of the accident. His mother sustained serious injuries and died in the hospital a few hours later, never regaining consciousness. The boy’s father sustained moderate injuries.

During the court proceedings, Myroslav Patskan, head of the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office, emphasized the severity of the consequences of this accident. “In this case, it is the consequences that matter most. Two people died. One of them was a child. Another person survived but has lost her family forever,” the prosecutor stated.

The court sentenced the driver to 8 years in prison and banned her from driving for 3 years. The court also partially granted the victims’ civil claims for compensation for emotional distress. The prosecutor’s office noted that the verdict may still be appealed in accordance with the law. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

In Kyiv, law enforcement officers detained a 39-year-old driver of a Daewoo Nubira who is suspected of causing a fatal traffic accident in the Obolon district. According to police, the man showed signs of intoxication and refused to undergo a breathalyzer test at the scene.
