In Kyiv, a woman promised men a reservation and a trip abroad for $18,000
Law enforcement officials in the capital have uncovered a scheme involving illegal evasion of mobilization. A 51-year-old Kyiv resident is suspected of extorting $18,000 in exchange for securing a "reservation," a deferment from conscription, and arranging for a conscript to travel abroad.
This was reported by the National Police in Kyiv.
The scheme was dismantled by investigators from the Pechersk Police Department in collaboration with operatives from the Strategic Investigations Department in Kyiv.
According to the investigation, the woman assured the man that she had influential connections and could help him secure employment at a critical enterprise. She further promised to include him on the lists of “reserved” employees, arrange a deferment from mobilization, and ensure the possibility of leaving Ukraine.
For her “services,” the suspect demanded $18,000.
Law enforcement officials established that the suspect initially received a $1,000 advance from the man and later an additional $17,000. Immediately after the transfer of funds, she was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
Investigators from the Pechersk Police Department, under the procedural supervision of the Pechersk District Prosecutor’s Office, notified the detainee of her suspicion under Part 3 of Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—receiving an unlawful benefit for influencing the decision-making of a person authorized to perform state functions, combined with the extortion of such a benefit.
The penalty under this article provides for up to eight years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Earlier, law enforcement agencies notified a member of the Kharkiv City Council of the suspicion against him; he is believed to be the organizer of the illegal smuggling of men of draft age across Ukraine’s state border.
