The Metro Authority has denied rumors of malfunctions at Lukyanivska Station during the attack
During the nighttime shelling of Kyiv on May 24, all systems at the Lukyanivska metro station were operating normally, and there were no power or ventilation outages.
Oksana Nikiforuk, spokesperson for the Kyiv Metro, told LB.ua this in response to passenger complaints on social media about smoke, white dust, and rumors of people exiting through the tunnel. According to her, station staff promptly turned on additional ventilation as soon as the smoke appeared.
The white dust and construction debris on the platform were not plaster from the underground section, which remained undamaged. They were simply swept in by the escalator’s incline from above when the blast wave damaged the station’s ground-level lobby. This above-ground building has been damaged by a blast wave for the eighth time, causing the glass in the ticket hall to shatter and the OSB panels—which had been used to cover the stained-glass windows after previous shelling—to fly out. Debris also landed on the escalator balustrade, but after cleaning and checking the automatic systems, the escalators resumed operation.
The blast wave also blew out the door to the staff room upstairs in the lobby, where a man was injured after going there out of curiosity to look at the situation on the street. Reports of people walking along the tracks in the subway are completely denied, with officials explaining that passengers were actually walking across the bridge at the front of the train, which leads to the service area and restrooms. After the all-clear, it was impossible to exit through the damaged ground-level lobby, so people left the station on the first morning trains according to the schedule.
