A court has ordered Netflix to pay subscribers €500 each in compensation for changing its pricing plans

A court in Italy has ruled that several price increases for Netflix subscriptions between 2017 and 2024 were unlawful.

This was reported by Interesting Engineering.

According to the ruling on a lawsuit filed by the organization Movimento Consumatori, the streaming service violated consumer rights by failing to provide clear reasons for changing pricing terms in user agreements. The court ordered the company to refund customers for the overpayment, which could amount to as much as €500 for premium plan users and around €250 for standard plans.

In addition to paying compensation, Netflix must lower current prices for customers who signed up for the service earlier: for example, the cost of the premium plan for them must be reduced from €19.99 to €11.99. The company is required to notify all affected users via email within 90 days; otherwise, the service faces a daily fine of 700 euros. Netflix representatives stated their intention to appeal the decision, emphasizing that their operating conditions in the country complied with the law. Meanwhile, in April 2025, the service had already updated its rules, adding technical and regulatory justifications for future service price adjustments amid global economic instability exacerbated by Russia’s actions. Preparations for the appeal process are currently underway.
