A Van Gogh painting was returned to the museum six years after it was stolen

Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting “Spring Garden” is once again on display for visitors at the Groninger Museum following an extensive restoration.

This was reported by RTV Noord.

The painting’s return took place exactly six years after its high-profile theft, which shook the global art community.

The story of the masterpiece’s disappearance began on March 30, 2020—symbolically, on the great artist’s birthday. The work was stolen from the Singer Laren Museum, where it was on temporary display.

“Exactly six years ago, Van Gogh’s painting ‘Spring Garden’ was stolen from the Singer Laren Museum, which had received it on loan from the Groninger Museum,” journalists note.

The search lasted three years and ended successfully thanks to the professional efforts of renowned art detective Arthur Brand.

The painting was returned under unusual circumstances—in an ordinary IKEA bag. The perpetrator responsible for this crime did not escape punishment and was sentenced to eight years in prison.

After the masterpiece was returned, experts discovered numerous damages on it caused by improper storage.

For some time, the museum deliberately displayed the painting in its damaged state to vividly demonstrate to the public the tragic consequences of the theft of cultural heritage.

Subsequently, a decision was made to carry out a large-scale restoration, which required specialists to work with the precision of a jeweler.

The main task was not only to eliminate defects but also to recreate as faithfully as possible the authentic brushwork characteristic of the great Dutch master.

The painting by Peter Paul Rubens, “Christ on the Cross,” which was believed to be lost, was found in Paris.

Earlier, a painting by Salvador Dalí was put up for auction for £20–30,000; the owner had previously purchased it at a sale in Cambridge for just £150 as the work of an unknown artist.

In Argentina, a painting titled “Portrait of a Lady” by Italian artist Vittorio Gislandi was accidentally discovered on a real estate website. It had been stolen by the Nazis from an art collection in Amsterdam during World War II.
